A blocked nose can make feeding and sleep feel like hard work. Start with your baby’s breathing, not a shopping list. If they are struggling for breath, cannot cry normally, have blue or gray lips, or are difficult to wake, call 911 in the U.S.
Keep the comfort measures simple.
Plain saline nose drops without added medicine, followed by gentle suction with an infant nasal aspirator or bulb, may help clear the nose before feeds. Follow the product instructions and ask your pediatrician to show you. Avoid forceful or deep suction.
Continue age-appropriate breast-milk or formula feeds. Contact the care team if feeding drops off or wet diapers are fewer than usual. Don’t give a young infant extra water to treat congestion unless their clinician specifically advises it.
Cool mist is for comfort.
A cool-mist humidifier can add moisture to dry air and may ease nasal stuffiness or a dry cough. Moisture may help loosen congestion. It does not cure the infection or treat every cause of noisy breathing.
Keep the humidifier and its cord out of reach. Change the water daily and clean it as the manufacturer directs to limit mold and bacteria. Choose cool mist to avoid the burn risk of hot water or steam. You don’t need a particular premium brand.
A congested baby still needs a flat sleep space.
Place baby on their back on a firm, flat mattress in their own crib, bassinet, or play yard, with a fitted sheet only. Don’t raise the mattress or use a pillow, wedge, swing, or bouncer for sleep.
Call about the baby, not just the temperature.
Faster or harder breathing, poor feeding, fewer wet diapers, or a baby who seems unusually unwell need prompt advice. For a baby younger than three months, a rectal reading of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs medical care right away. Keep the age-based fever and diaper references handy.
A barking cough or harsh noise when breathing in can be croup rather than a simple stuffy nose. Read the croup note and its urgent breathing signs. A humidifier is not treatment for a narrowed airway, and emergency symptoms should not wait for a callback.
